Movie Trailer Review: Awake (2007)

The movie trailer for Awake is now online, and I must say I'm intrigued. The movie stars Hayden Christensen and Jessica Alba (oh, and Terrence Howard), and is a psychological thriller about a guy who is put under anesthesia for a dangerous operation, but who doesn't quite fall asleep. While he is in his nearly comatose state, he hears the doctors, including one of his friends, plotting to just kill him to save themselves the trouble. What happens next appears to be a surreal adventure, as he isn't sure what is true and what isn't. All I know is that includes scenes of Jessica Alba about as nude as you've seen her.

The movie looks interesting, and the concept is a good one. Other than in Star Wars, I've liked Christensen quite a bit - he was great in Shattered Glass, and his performance in Life as a House was also top notch. This one looks a little more mainstream, but could be a good vehicle for him if done right.

Sadly, Awake is one of those films that could end up being lame, especially if the ending is pretty stupid (I give it a 50/50 chance). Still, I'll be heading to theaters, if not just to see Ms. Alba.

Watch the Awake movie trailer.

Well Erik, I have to say that as an anesthesia provider, I'm appalled at the concept that the screenwriter could get away with the quote in the trailer that 1 in 700 people undergoing anesthesia experience an "awake" phenomena. It's just not true at all. Undergoing anesthesia in the hands of a nurse anesthetist or an anesthesiologist leaves you with about a 1 in 80,000 chance of having any recall - and usually it's with trauma surgery and pregnancy. While I admit, I like the players in this movie - I wish the screenwriter could have left out an attempt at a false piece of information used as a total ploy to freak people out by telling a complete lie. Awareness under anesthesia is possible, yes. But RARE. Nonetheless, the movie has potential to be a spine-chiller - hoping that the ending is not lame as you had said. Please rant and rave!!!

Erik...I am anesthesiologist...what a crock...1 in 700 is totally absurd...I given over 5000 anesthetics myself without a case of recall...The risk is definately higher in trauma, cardiac surgery, and pregnancy, but still miniscule...The general public is already freaked out about surgery and anesthesia and this will only make it worse...Our society, the American Society of Anesthesiologists, tried to consult with the makers of this movie to make it more accurate concerning recall/awareness during anesthesia but they would have no part of it...I would ask everyone to boycott this movie...(even if Jessica is looking pretty hot ;)

Thanks for the comments... I don't know if scientific inaccuracy is enough to keep me away from Jessica, though...
